Chlorine is added to drinking water in many countries in order to avoid the spreading of epidemics. However it has also unintended consecuences, because residual free chlorine is absorbed by human skin and has been related to allergies, arteriosclerosis and even cancer.

Since the discovery and legalization of alternatives to have safe drinking water will probably take some more time, transitional solutions are welcome as well. One promising option is self-powered dechlorination as developed by researchers at the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) in Taiwan: Kinetic energy which is contained within flowing water is used for an electrolyzer installed in the homes just before the point of use in order to neutralize not only chlorine, but even more chemicals which are dissolved in the drinking water.

Instead of using expensive filters, external electricity and wiring, this innovative System produces its own energy. The excess of energy produced in this way can be used for LEDs which show the water temperature or strong LED lamps for safety.

Would this process also work on chloramines? Chloramine is rapidly taking over chlorine as a form of water "treatment" in the United States.
